'I am back, but this is not my comeback'

The slim and gorgeous Karisma Kapoor is all set for her comeback. This time though, it's not films, but television. The actress is one of the judges in the fourth season of dance reality show, Nach Baliye along with Farah Khan and Arjun Rampal.

She tells Rajul Hegde about her new role and more.

Why did you choose Nach Baliye to make your comeback?

I am back, but this is not my comeback. Everyone is doing television, so why not me? I have been a dancer all my life but this is the first time that I will be judging others on their dancing skills. People used to judge me until now but now, I will be judging them.

Sourav Ganguly lashed out at the previous Dilip Vengsarkar-led selection committee on Thursday, saying he decided to retire to save himself the humiliation of being treated as the "scarificial goat" all the time while others are spared.

"There is no point playing like this. I am not willing to play at their (selectors') mercy. They will pick you now and then dump you. Why should I be the sacrificial goat all the time? It was difficult to accept," Ganguly, who announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, said.

"If a gun is held at your head, how far can you bear it. That too after playing 450 matches. I played badly in only one series. But others are not dropped. I have scored the highest number of runs after comeback," he was quoted as saying by Bengali daily Aaj Kaal.

"How long would I have played? Maybe, up to 2009. Maybe, seven more Tests. For that I was not prepared to take any more humiliation," he added.

Ganguly said being dropped from the Rest of India squad for the Irani Trophy by the selection panel led by Vengsarkar was the last nail in the coffin.

"I never thought I will be out of the Irani team. I couldn't sleep for one month in anger, agony. Had this committee (new selection committee) come three years ago, things might have been different," said the 36-year-old left-hander.

Reminded about Sunil Gavaskar's that he and VVS Laxman are always put under pressure, Ganguly was at his sarcastic best.

"Everything happens in Indian cricket. When Greg Chappell me, he chose T P Singh [former Railways player now with the ICL] to replace me. Where is he now?" Ganguly asked.

"Some have not scored any runs in the last three series, some have not scored any run during the last one year. Some have changed their hair style more number of times than the number of runs they have scored. I was dropped despite scoring the highest number of runs following my comeback."

Dropping from the Irani Trophy hurt Ganguly so much that he considered it more painful than being sacked from the team after the alleged spat with then coach Chappell.

"Exclusion from the Irani team hurt more. Then I thought, it is the end," he said, when asked which of the two was more painful.

But despite the trials and tribulations in his eventful but illustrious 16-year-long international cricketer, Ganguly is a satisfied man.

"I have played 109 Tests, over 300 ODIs. I am the fourth-highest run-getter in the country, the total runs in Tests and ODIs being 18,251. Ninth in the world. I took the team to the World Cup final. Defeated Australia in Australia. Won the series in Pakistan, altogether 21 Test wins. But you don't get everything you want," he said.

The Bengal stalwart said he carefully mulled over his retirement decision and thought it was the right time to go.

"I have thought over it a lot. I took the decision after considering everything. I thought it was the best time to go. I wanted to end the matter before the (Australia) series started. All speculation was telling on me. The selectors said something and did something else."

Asked if he was sad over the fact that he would not play again for India, Ganguly said, "I am also a human being. Cricket is a passion. Anybody will feel sad. But it is not as tough as I thought it will be. Now I feel a huge load has been removed."

On playing in the swansong series, the left-hander said he would want to end his career on a high by helping the team win the series against Australia.

"I aim at the team winning the series. It will be great if I end up on the winning side. I am concentrating on the four Tests," he said.

Meanwhile, the legendary Gavaskar said Ganguly's outburst against the selectors is "understandable" but he should have waited till the end of the series against Australia in order to maintain the harmony in the dressing room.

"I think the outburst is understandable; I only wish that this outburst was only after the series had been concluded," Gavaskar said.

"By saying all these things, he has not helped himself and I don't think he has helped harmony in the dressing room. All that he had to say, he could have said after the series was over," Gavaskar told CNN-IBN.

"Ever since he made his debut in 1991-92, there has been a gun pointed at Ganguly's head. Everybody has always presumed that he has got into the Indian team because of reasons other than cricket and he has to prove them wrong over and over again", Gavaskar said.

"So one is sympathetic with the way he is feeling... with what happened to him in recent times, being omitted from Rest of India squad when everybody else was picked to play," he added.

Gold @ Rs 14,200; may rise to Rs 15,000-mark by Diwali!

With the meltdown in the stock markets driving investors towards bullion, gold prices are likely to touch Rs 15,000 per 10 gram by Diwali, say analysts.

Gold prices on Friday reached an all-time high of Rs 14,200 per 10 gram in the Delhi bullion and analysts said the trend is likely to continue in the coming days.

"We see domestic gold prices cross Rs 15,000 per ten gram before Diwali after gauging the current financial situation both in global and domestic market," Religare commodities business head Jayant Manglik told PTI.

In India, depreciation in rupee against the US dollar has led gold reach an all-time high today despite gold trading at about 12 per cent below its peak in dollar terms, adding that lack of investment avenues has led to some serious investment in gold worldwide and this demand is helping push prices up.

Kotak commodities associate vice president Si Kannan said, "Yellow metal prices would surge in the range of Rs 14,500-15,000 by Diwali."

"The combination of factors have contributed to the rise in gold prices. However, the financial crisis is keeping gold as a safest haven for investment as compared to equity, bonds and other assets," he added.

Experts said investors are buying gold, a traditional safe-haven asset, following fears of deepening global financial crisis sent the domestic stock market tumble in early morning session. The Bombay Stock Exchange fell over 1,000 points.

At 1500 hours on the MCX counter, the most-active December contract rose by 3.98 per cent at Rs 14,147 per ten gram, while February 2009 by 3.87 per cent at Rs 14,214 per ten gram.

The October contract at NCDEX,jumped by 3.47 per cent at Rs 14,004 per 10 gm and November contract gained 3.64 per cent at Rs 14,085 per 10 gm.

We will thrash Aussies 3-1: Sehwag

New Delhi: The 'Nawaab of Najafgarh' is all set to have a go at the Aussies. Virender Sehwag is aware of his role in the series and confident if India gets favourble tracks, Australia will just not be beaten but will be thrashed. CNN-IBN's Cricket Editor Nishant Arora caught up with Sehwag at his home ground where he inaugurated the a new bowling machine.

On sticking to his roots

It is my responsibility to look after my center and my coach and give opportunities to them to produce other cricketers from this academy. The credit goes to Mr. A N Sharma who brought this bowling machine and give chance to youngsters to play against fast bowling.

On the Australian preparation for the Test series

In a practice game, you are not 100 per cent on and you are just practicing for the Test match and are not worried about the result. I think they got what they wanted out of the game. They are ready for the Tests.

On the Aussie bowling attack

In my opinion, they have quality pace attack but don't have quality spin bowling. So they lack that. I have seen the off-spinner who gave 123 runs in 20 overs against the Board President's XI. I think we will go after him.

On his role

It is my responsibility and my job as an opener to give a good start to my team and if I get a start, I continue and covert that into a big one, the way I did in Australia and Sri Lanka. That's my job and I love to do that.

I am in good nick but I am looking forward to this series and hope I do well because it's against the Aussies and everybody knows it's a tough task to get runs against them.

On India's chances

The Indian team is the only team that beat Australia in Australia twice. We beat them in Perth last time and before that in Adelaide. So, we are accepting the challenge and we will fight it out. Hopefully we will do well and reclaim the Border Gavaskar trophy.

On the probable result

If we are playing on spin friendly tracks, the series might be in our favour 3-1.

Harbhajan Singh says India can beat Australia four-nil

Kolkata, Oct 6 : Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that he is looking forward to scalping Aussie captain Ricky Ponting as the four-test series starts in Bangalore this week.

After inaugurating a community prayer hall here last evening, Singh said he hoped India would be able to demolish Australia four-nil.

"I sought blessings from goddess that we beat Australia 4-0. I am sure with all your support and wishes, we will beat Australia. I'll get Ponting's wicket also by goddess' blessings," he said.

Harbhajan, who took 32 wickets in the 2-1 victory over Australia in 2001, needs nine more scalps to reach 300 in Tests.

He sought to downplay the controversy surrounding the five senior players ahead of the start of the test series.

"I am sure they'll come up strong and score plenty of runs. They'll win games for India. They have done it many times. I am sure they will do it again," Harbhajan said.

Harbhajan added that Australia was a good side though its bowling lacked sting after the retirement of all-time greats like Shane Warne and Glen Mc Grath.

"Australia is still a good side. They don't have quality of Shane Warne Mc Grath or Gilchrist in their side. We are looking forward to play some good cricket and tough cricket against them. I am sure if we play to our potential, we can beat any team. We are looking forward for the series to get start," Harbhajan said.

Australia won a four-test series 2-1 four years ago to record their first series victory on Indian soil in 35 years but are rebuilding after several high-profile retirements.

The first test starts in Bangalore on October 9. The remaining tests are in Mohali, Delhi and Nagpur.

Durga Puja: It's a million dollar business

he temple priest has rung his bell,
A cloud of smoke from candles and lamps
Haloes the Goddess, glowing bright
This beat of drums both maddens and dulls.

The incense burns: so heady the musk,
Our senses flounder in the flood.
This endless chant of sacred words
Soon drugs our lips and stuns our minds.

-- Thus wrote poet Srinjay Chakravarty, depicting aptly the spirit of Durga Puja, the greatest festival of the Bengalis the world over.

Bengalis, no matter in which corner of the world they reside in, ensure that they look, feel and eat their best during the four days of the festival that coincide with the last four days of Navratri.

And in their fervour to make the most of the festival, they often forget to acknowledge the contribution of those who work round the clock for months to make Durga Puja a success.

Do you know that beneath the veneer of ornate pandals, intricately sculptured idols, rustling new clothes and endless series of cultural exercises, Durga Puja happens to be a million-dollar business, orchestrated by several tireless souls.

Take the case of Kumartuli, India's only potter town, for instance.

Its unassuming, dingy lanes transform into makeshift dwelling places for hundreds associated with the idol making industry, a thriving business, months before the festival begins.

Apart from delivering more than 10,000 idols to Kolkata and other parts of India, Kumartuli churns out over 1,500 idols only for export to Indians living in the United States, South Africa, Canada, England, Australia, and parts of Europe.

As one enters Kumartuli, an intoxicating smell of wet clay fills one's senses -- a smell that reminds one of the untimely shower. At the moment, this seat of about 300 kumors (potters) is buzzing with activity.

Having shipped out more than 1,000 idols so far to various parts of the world, potters here have their hands full finishing idols ordered by local clubs and Puja committees.

Artistic acumen of Kumartuli potters/artists like Madhusudan Pal, Jayanta Pal, Pradeep Rudrapal, Sanatan Rudrapal, Mohanbanshi Rudrapal, is stuff stories are made of.

According to Jayanta Pal, "On an average, four to five people directly work on each idol, whereas about 250 people, mostly residents of southern suburbs of Kolkata, are indirectly involved in the process."

"The cost of an idol varies according to its size. For example, a 12-foot idol is expected to fetch Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000, whereas a taller version, a 20-foot structure, can fetch as much as Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000," says Pal.

Dravid, Ganguly have poor record against Australia

One team that always gives Australia a headache is India. Though known for its inconsistency, India always raises its game several notches when facing the World champions.

India are able to trouble the all-conquering Aussies because of the world class batsmen it has produced over the years.

A look at India's best players against Australia over the years reveals interesting details.

It is not Sachin Tendulkar emerges the best batsman against Australia, but charimastic all-rounder Ravi Shastri.

Among the current lot, only VVS Laxman makes it to the all-time top 10.

How to trick your brain into spending less

Can't figure why your brain is conned to spend, spend, spend -- specially during the festive season?

Well, the possibility is that, while shopping the mind gets 'out of control' and it becomes hard to restrain retail urges -- but if you want to take control of the buying instincts -- then here are few tips.

According to TimesOnline, a person can kid his or her instinct into spending less. Here's how:

1. Give yourself -- and your purse -- a break

Pausing briefly between choosing something and taking it to the check-out can dramatically boost the chance of the cash staying in your purse

2. Don't even touch your cards
Credit cards might not only anaesthetise retail pain, they may create a physical craving to get the dopamine high from spending,

3. Keep brands out of your brain
Designer brands have proved unprecedentedly effective at persuading you to spend more money on "special" goods that are actually only of average quality. Brands are painstakingly developed to encourage people to identify with them, to believe that their favourite labels have exactly the same human values as they do. So stay miles away from them

4. Don't shop with friends
People spend more money to maintain our self-image in front of others.

5. Staying calm costs less
People are more liable to spree when financially squeezed: under stress they can feel driven to hoard, says a study of students in Behavioural Research Therapy.

Test career stats of Team India

India's new selection committee retained former captain Sourav Ganguly in the Test squad for the first two matches against Australia starting on October 9.

Also included in the 15-man squad was the uncapped duo of Tamil Nadu batsman Subramaniam Badrinath and Haryana leggie Amit Mishra.

Wicetkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni returned to the Test squad after missing the Sri Lanka

Here's a look the Test career statistics of the 15-man squad:

Tri-nation Twenty20 series in 2009

Twenty20 cricket is poised to take its next big step in 2009 with India, Australia and South Africa planning to play in the first-ever "super series", which is proposed to be held in two of those countries.

As the first non-ICC multilateral tournament involving national teams, this event will mark a paradigm shift for the sport's newest format but it faces several hurdles such as finding a window in an already crowded calendar, and negotiating the ICC ruling that allows a maximum of seven Twenty20 matches a year per country.

"It will be somewhat similar to the Tri-Nations rugby series," Gerald Majola, chief executive of Cricket South Africa (CSA), told Cricinfo. "It will be happening next year, and the matches will be held in South Africa and Australia."

However, organisers are yet to finalise a window for the tournament next year, he said.

The Tri-Nations rugby Cup is an annual tournament featuring South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, which was first contested in 1996. The competition is organised by a consortium formed by rugby's governing bodies in the three countries. The 2008 event involved nine matches with each country getting three home games.

Majola said the proposed Twenty20 series - which was finalised during discussions in Dubai recently on the sidelines of the ICC meeting of chief executives - will have a distinct identity of its own. "At this point of time, we are confident that it will take place but we haven't finalized venues, details of the prize money or sponsorship," he said.

The international calendar for next year is already packed with the Ashes and the World Twenty20 in England. These will be followed by the Champions Twenty20 League, and a one-day series between India and Australia. Space is yet to be found for the postponed Champions Trophy as well.

The Twenty20 format took off with the World Twenty20 in South Africa last year that was won by India, home of the largest television market for the game. It soon led to the franchise-based IPL, which offered a prize money of US$1.2million, and was held across eight venues in India earlier this year.

Subsequently, the Indian board took the lead in organizing the US$6million Champions Twenty20 League - to be held in India from December 3-10 - that will involve the domestic Twenty20 champions of India, Australia, South Africa, England and Pakistan.

However, concerns have been raised by the ICC over the need to have more control of such leagues, and Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain, even sought one annual tournament to avoid the game being taken over by its shortest format.
